English Drama course with Andrew Fearn
Now boasting more than 25 successful years under the leadership of an experienced theatre educator Andrew Fearn, this is the only full-time drama course in Finland to operate totally in English and is unparalleled.
This course is designed for students interested in drama or theatre and wondering what the first serious steps are. It offers a solid foundation for those keen to improve their chance of finding entry to an English-speaking drama school or university. The course is also ideal for those with minimal interest in theatre who merely want to develop their English language (especially spoken English) skills in a way that is more interesting than sitting in a classroom and poring over the rules of grammar: the language is given practical applications.
Some former students used the course to further their language skills, develop their confidence and learn about themselves and their place in the world and have gone on to successful careers outside the realms of theatre and drama. A number of teachers and other education professionals have worked with Andrew and found the work highly beneficial in regard to their own areas.
Contact teaching runs mainly from Monday to Friday at 9-14 o'clock. Students will also need to do a considerable amount of work in their own time: reading, writing, preparing, rehearsing, etc...
Is this course suitable for you?
Students will ideally be over 18 years old. There is no upper age limit. Previous experience is not a requirement. There are no auditions but in some cases an interview may be required.
Having sufficient skill with the English language and having the will to work and learn and progress are much more important. Students will need motivation and commitment. It can be hard work, it can be challenging, students may have to operate outside of their "comfort zones" but it is a lot of fun!
Whilst the emphasis will naturally fall on performance skills this is not an Acting Course or a Star Academy, the outlook is much broader and hopefully more useful: the focus is actually on transferable skills that have applications in many areas of work and life.
Previous student intakes have included students from around the world: Italy, Latvia South Africa, USA, Zambia, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Morocco, France...The course operates on a system of inclusion and welcomes applicants from other nations. However, we are unable to help with visas or other administrative requirements. Similarly we are not in a position to provide bursaries or other forms of financial assistance.
Many of Andrew's students have moved on to University or Theatre School in th UK, USA, etc. Some have gone on to enjoy employment and success in theatre, film, television as performers, directors, educators... Many have applied what they have learned to other things and are working as teachers, translators, etc.
Concept of Learning
Academic theory combined with practical experience and then applied with enthusiasm to suitable subject matter is the way that skills are developed. Mistakes sometimes need to be made, in an atmosphere of enjoyable discovery, for growth to occur. Hard work and fun should go hand in hand.
These principles play a significant part in the structuring and methodologies behind this course:
-
CLIL (Content and language integrated learning)
-
Learning by doing
-
Process more important than results (all work is ’work-in-progress’)
-
No single methodology is applicable but the Maieutic Method is frequently used
-
The course is necessarily student-centred and approaches may vary depending on the students

English Drama on ainutlaatuinen koulutus
English Drama yhdistää teoriaa ja käytäntöä
Opiskelussa akateeminen teoriatieto yhdistyy innostuneeseen käytännön työskentelyyn ja kokemuksellisuuteen. Työskentelyilmapiiri on tutkiva ja salliva. Joskus tarvitaan virheitä, jotta kehitystä voi tapahtua. Kova työ ja hauskanpito kulkevat koulutuksessa käsi kädessä.
Koulutuksen keskeisiä pedagogisia lähestymistapoja ovat:
-
CLIL (Content and Language integrated Learning) – vieraskielinen sisällön opetus, jossa tässä tapauksessa yhdistyy englannin kielen ja draaman oppiminen
-
elinikäinen oppiminen - ajatus siitä, että oppiminen ei koskaan lopu
-
tekemällä oppiminen
-
prosessi on lopputulosta tärkeämpi (kaikkia teoksia työstetään work-in-progress -periaatteella)
-
sokraattinen menetelmä
-
työskentely on opiskelijakeskeistä ja opetusmenetelmät vaihtelevat opiskelijoiden tarpeiden mukaan
English Drama -koulutuksen keskeiset sisällöt:
-
teatterihistoria
-
teatterityö
-
tekstistä esitykseen
-
improvisaatio
-

OPETTAJASI

Head of English Drama
Andrew Fearn (BA; Hons).
Andrew fell into the theatre aged 13 and has never recovered. He has been studying, working or teaching in theatre-related areas for most of his life (and earned a degree in Theatre/Drama/Literature from the University of Liverpool along the way, specialising in TIE).
A professional actor/writer/director and educator he has many years of experience (stage, TV, film, voicework, comedy impro). He has been running the English Drama course at LSO for over 25 years, and has additionally lectured at universities/colleges in Finland, UK and Russia.
He is an internationally published poet, was the singer/frontman for a couple of bands, performed stand- up comedy in Helsinki and has directed more plays than he can remember. He says that one of his proudest moments was being described by one of his professors (on completion of his degree) as an iconoclast, another was appearing on Ukranian TV news.
He spends his free time – with his two dogs – reading and studying, scribbling and painting, and dreaming of one day going back to Nepal for another visit. Both of his children are students.
