An Unforgettable Week: Bridging Cultures and Building Connections

From 5–12 July 2026, West Finland College welcomed its first student group from Kyrgyzstan for an English Language and Finnish Culture Camp at our residential campus in Huittinen.

The programme marked the beginning of an exciting new collaboration between West Finland College (Länsi-Suomen opisto) and Tedcenter.fi. Together, we created a tailor-made educational experience that combined practical English learning, cultural immersion, shared activities, excursions, accommodation, and personalised dining arrangements.

Our goal was to provide much more than a traditional language course. Throughout the week, students were encouraged to use English actively, build confidence, discover Finnish culture, and form new connections.

Learning English Through Real-Life Experiences

The programme followed an interactive and communicative approach. Rather than relying only on textbooks and written exercises, students used English through group discussions, teamwork, role-plays, collaborative problem-solving, and everyday communication.

English became a practical tool for learning, travelling, meeting new people, and participating in unfamiliar situations.

Students practised asking questions, expressing opinions, sharing ideas, making decisions, and working together. This helped them move from understanding English in theory to using it more naturally and confidently.

What the Students Achieved

During the intensive week, participants strengthened both their language skills and their ability to communicate beyond the classroom.

Greater communicative confidence

Students developed greater confidence in speaking English spontaneously. They practised responding to questions, contributing to discussions, and expressing themselves in everyday situations.

Practical language skills

Participants used English in situations connected to travel, public transport, dining, shopping, asking for information, and social interaction. These experiences helped bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world independence.

Cross-cultural understanding

Through lessons, shared meals, activities, and excursions, students gained a deeper understanding of Finnish society, history, traditions, and everyday life.

The experience was also a genuine cultural exchange. Students brought their own backgrounds, perspectives, and traditions into the learning environment, enriching the programme for everyone involved.

Teamwork and personal growth

Collaborative activities encouraged students to develop leadership, cooperation, adaptability, and interpersonal skills. Working in a multilingual and multicultural environment helped participants become more confident, open-minded, and independent.

Finland as a Living Classroom

During the programme, Finland itself became a living classroom.

The group visited Tampere, Turku, and Helsinki, where students explored Finnish city life, science, art, culture, and maritime heritage. They also experienced the peace and natural beauty of a Finnish national park.

These excursions were much more than sightseeing trips. They provided authentic opportunities for students to apply what they had learned.

Students practised buying tickets, ordering food, asking for directions, navigating unfamiliar places, interacting with others, and managing everyday situations in English. Each visit became an extension of the classroom and an opportunity to learn through experience.

A Complete Residential Learning Experience

West Finland College is a historic residential campus where education, accommodation, dining, wellbeing, and community life come together in one place.

This allows us to create complete programmes for visiting international groups. Teaching can be combined with cultural activities, excursions, nature experiences, shared meals, evening programmes, and opportunities for informal communication.

For the Kyrgyzstan group, we developed both a tailor-made curriculum and a personalised dining programme. Our aim was to ensure that the participants felt welcomed, supported, and able to focus fully on learning and experiencing Finland.

Looking Ahead

We are deeply grateful for the positive feedback received from the students and for the smooth and successful cooperation with Tedcenter.fi.

This pilot programme created a strong foundation for future educational initiatives and long-term international cooperation. It also demonstrated what can be achieved when language learning, cultural exchange, practical experience, and residential education are brought together.
