West Finland International Summer High School
Huittinen 7–13 July 2023
At the camp-style summer high school you can complete the national history module, but the perspective is broadened in cooperation with students from another continent. Together we can explore how the teaching of history and ideas about it differ between Morocco and Finland, and how this helps us understand possible futures.

International
summer high school in Huittinen
Welcome to study
at West Finland College!
All upper secondary students, as well as students about to move on to upper secondary education, are welcome to West Finland Summer High School.
The programme puts a strong emphasis on getting to know each other and on a great group spirit. You can make lifelong friendships both with students from all over Finland and with upper secondary students living in Tetouan on the Mediterranean coast. Through the exchange programme of the Summer High School Society (see Morocco Summer High School) a small group of Moroccan young people from the La Ruche des Sciences school takes part in the summer high school.
The course takes place at West Finland College, whose beautiful historic wooden manor house and welcoming college campus lie by the river in Huittinen, within easy reach of good transport connections (only 80 km from Tampere, 60 km from Pori and 85 km from Turku). You can travel to the camp-style summer high school even from far away and stay in a twin room.
History course
Teaching is largely in English and shared with the upper secondary school students from Morocco (36 lessons, including excursions and evening programme). While the Moroccan group gets to know the basics of Finnish and Finnish culture, the Finnish students focus on the contents of the HI6 module in Finnish (approx. 20 lessons). The summer high school therefore offers:
1) the national course credit HI6
2) a more applied approach to the subject and a glimpse into the themes of futures research
3) a unique international camp experience and fun together with new friends
HISTORY
On the edge of history (HI6 The Cultures of the World Meet, 2 credits)
The course focuses on interfaces: how Europe meets other continents in history, in the present moment and in the future. With a conversational and warm approach, together with enthusiastic Moroccan upper secondary students, we dismantle Eurocentrism, and examine both the history of colonialism and non-European views of history and of the future. At the same time we learn about a fascinating culture that is thousands of years old.

Other programme
Free time is spent together with outdoor and other games and a guided free-time programme. During the summer high school there is time for sport, sauna and swimming, and for spending the evening together around a fire or on picnic blankets. We make two excursions to nearby destinations.
The programme also includes a culture evening planned together, in which the Moroccan and Finnish participants present their own countries and cultures. There may be an atmospheric space, games, pictures, music, dances, food and treats. What would you tell others about your own Finland?
You can also spend your free time outdoors in the surrounding countryside, enjoying the river views from the riverside terrace or exploring the college's own library. Huittinen town centre, a few kilometres away, offers a wide range of services, such as shops, specialist stores, a bowling alley, sports fields and a good swimming pool.
